Player Beats the Odds to Claim Casino Winnings
A Cuban immigrant’s lucky casino streak recently confronted him with an unlikely obstacle on his road to collecting over $6,000 in slot machine winnings.
Eduardo Cardoso frequently visited Seminole Classic Casino near his South Florida home to try his luck. Over numerous weekend trips, Cardoso incredibly hit the jackpot not once, not twice, but three separate times at the slots.
The delighted winner’s elation soon turned to dismay when the casino refused to pay out. As a Cuban passport holder, Cardoso fell subject to federal regulations prohibiting Cuban nationals from claiming gambling prizes unless they provide documentation of foreign residency.
The well-intentioned casino clarified that the U.S. Treasury Department rules forbid payouts to Cuban citizens still residing in Cuba. Cardoso would need to present a U.S. passport or permanent resident card to collect his fairly won earnings.
Over the next year and a half, the determined man painstakingly gathered the necessary paperwork confirming his U.S. residency status. Cardoso recently re-approached the casino, prize verification finally in hand.
